Use case/Functional parts

Prusa MK4 functional parts: fit, walls and materials

The MK4's 250 × 210 × 220 mm envelope is well suited to precise functional parts, but it is not square: a long bracket can fit along X and fail along the 210 mm Y axis. Use the orientation, wall and material guidance here before checking the actual model.

Typical size

Typical functional parts: roughly 20–200 mm. Brackets, jigs and enclosures should leave clearance for fasteners and the 210 mm Y depth.

Fit and size

  • The Y depth is 210 mm, not 250 mm. Rotate long brackets or split them before assuming the full plate is available.
  • The 220 mm Z height is useful for tall housings, but tall, thin parts need a stable orientation and a brim.
  • Small holes, snap fits and screw bosses depend on slicer shrinkage and clearance; print a fit coupon before a full batch.

Splitting plan

  1. 1

Split brackets longer than the usable Y depth at a hidden seam. Add alignment keys or bolt flanges in CAD; this tool does not create connectors.

  2. 2

Keep critical mating features on one part and split away non-critical length. Test the joint under load, not just the dry fit.

  3. 3

For large assemblies, split into 3–5 parts and orient each one so layer lines do not cross the main load path.

Print settings and walls

  • Start with 0.2 mm layers, 3–4 walls (about 1.2–1.6 mm), 25–40% infill and additional walls around screw bosses.
  • Use 0.2–0.3 mm clearance for mating parts, then drill or ream holes if the fit is critical.
  • PETG is a good tough default; PLA is stiffer but creeps under sustained load. ABS/ASA need an enclosure on the open MK4.

Wall-thickness profile

Use the PETG profile for a tough functional default; raise the structural target around fasteners and load paths.

Material choices

PETG: tough, chemical-resistant and a good default for brackets and jigs.
PLA: stiff and dimensionally accurate, but can creep or soften under heat and sustained load.
ABS/ASA: use an enclosure; they are useful for heat exposure but add warp risk.

Use-case limits

  • The open frame is not ideal for ABS/ASA; the dimensional check does not include warping or chamber temperature.
  • A functional part can fit and still fail because of layer orientation, creep or a weak screw boss.
  • The bounding box does not include tolerances, fastener heads or the space needed to assemble the part.
